Clark County, Wisconsin

Early Norwegian Settlement

Anton Larsen and Chr. Larson from Byåsen, and Carl Nechelsen from Orkdal near Trondheim, were the first Norwegian settlers in Clark County. They came from Black River Falls and settled at Greenwood in 1870. The first Norwegian to settle in the city of Greenwood was the shoemaker Elias Pedersen Woddan, also from Trøndelag. He settled there in 1871.

Churches and Congregations

The first Norwegian congregation in the county was established at Greenwood in 1872 by Pastor A. O. Alfsen of the Norwegian Synod. Clark County had ten Norwegian congregations and six churches. Five congregations belonged to the United Church, four to the Norwegian Synod, and one to the Baptist Church.

Norwegian Place Names

Until a short time before this account was written (ca. 1905), Clark County had a post office with the distinctly Norwegian name Eidsvold.
