Norwegian Community in Portland
Relatively few Norwegian families lived in Maine. In 1872, there were already a few Norwegians in Portland. Together with Schleswigers, Danes, and a few Swedes, they established a congregation that was served by a Norwegian pastor. There was no distinct Norwegian settlement in Maine. Most of the Norwegians in Portland were employed in factory work.
Churches and Congregations
By 1905, Portland had two Norwegian congregations. One belonged to the United Church and the other to the Evangelical Free Church.
