Early Norwegian Settlement
A family named Thompson from Ryfylke were the first Norwegian settlers in the area. They settled at Genesis in 1891, where a small Norwegian community later developed. Later that same year, Gulbrand Gulbrandsen from Hallingdal also arrived. Corn and potatoes were the principal crops raised in the settlement. During the early years, laborers earned about fifty cents per day.
