There were not many Norwegians in Des Moines County, but there was nevertheless a congregation with its own church. The congregation belonged to the United Church.
In the spring of 1856, three brothers from Strandvik, Norway, left Bergen aboard the brig Haakon Adelsten, bound for Quebec. One of the brothers eventually settled in Des Moines County, Iowa. He later wrote an account of his journey from Norway, “By Sailing Ship Haakon Adelsten to America, 1856.”
