Edmunds County, South Dakota

Early Norwegian Settlement

Asle K. Helgelien from Ål, Hallingdal, Ole M. Oyhus from Valdres, and Helmer Nilsen were the first Norwegian settlers in Edmunds County. They settled in the vicinity of Scatterwood in 1883. The area was completely desolate when they arrived, with no houses or other buildings in sight. The settlers began with mixed farming.

Churches and Congregations

Skandia Congregation, the only Norwegian congregation in the county, was established in 1887. It originally belonged to the Norwegian Synod but later joined the United Church.
