Norwegian Communities in Hoboken and Jersey City
A considerable number of Norwegians lived in Hoboken, where there were two Norwegian congregations, each with its own church. One belonged to the Norwegian Synod and the other to the Evangelical Free Church. Jersey City also had a substantial population of Norwegian ancestry. The same two church bodies each maintained a congregation and church there as well. By 1905, Hudson County therefore had four Norwegian congregations and four Norwegian churches.
The principal occupations among Norwegians in Hudson County were connected with the maritime industries. Many worked loading and unloading ships, in shipping, or in shipyards, dry docks, and repair shops. Others found employment in paper and silk mills.
Norwegian-American Press
The newspaper Luthersk Sendebud, published by clergy of the Norwegian Synod on the Atlantic Coast, was established in 1904.
