James City County, Virginia

Early Norwegian Settlement

C. M. Bergh from Land Parish was the first Norwegian settler in James City County. He settled at Toano in 1896 and became the founder of the Norwegian settlement there. By 1905, a post office named Norge had been established in the area.

Churches and Congregations

Zion Congregation, the first Norwegian congregation in Virginia, was established in the settlement in 1898 by Pastor H. Rue. It was served by pastors of the United Church and had its own meeting house. By 1905, another Norwegian congregation had recently been established at Barhamsville, where a number of Norwegians had also settled. This congregation was likewise served by pastors of the United Church.
