Early Norwegian Settlement
The first Norwegian settler in Kootenai County was Hans A. Sandager from Modum. He settled near Stinson in 1894. On the final part of the journey, two men ferried Sandager, his family, and their baggage across a lake on a log raft, carrying them from the edge of settled country toward their future home. Another Norwegian who had lived in the county for many years was Captain Sørensen of Coeur d'Alene. P. Johnson and T. Hedal had also been residents there for some time.
Churches and Congregations
The first, and by 1905 the only, Norwegian congregation in Kootenai County was established at Stinson in 1901 by Pastor J. Blækkan of the Norwegian Synod.
