Lake County, Minnesota

Early Norwegian Settlement

The first Norwegian in Lake County was Chas. M. Flaathe from Hommelvik near Trondheim. He settled at Two Harbors in 1884.

Later that same year came the brothers Ole and Andrew Hansen from Romsdal; M. A. Johnson and P. M. Johnson from Vefsen; and John Osbakken from Nordland.

Most of Lake County was covered with forest, and logging was therefore the principal source of income. By about 1907, nearly all the forest had been cleared, and farming had consequently begun.

Churches and Congregations

There were two Norwegian churches and three congregations in the county. Two congregations belonged to the United Church and one to the Methodist Church.
