Early Norwegian Settlement
Harald Hansen and William Johansen from Kristiania (Oslo) were the first Norwegian settlers in Lewis County. They came from California and settled at Alpha as early as 1867, many years before other Norwegians arrived in the area. During their first years there, Hansen and Johansen reportedly saw no other people in the vicinity except Indians.
Churches and Congregations
A Norwegian Lutheran congregation was established at Alpha in 1886 by Pastor H. Engh. At Winlock, there was also a small Norwegian congregation served by a pastor of the Norwegian Synod.
