Marinette County, Wisconsin

Early Norwegian Settlement

The first Norwegian farmers in Marinette County were P. Pederson from Blaker, Gudbrandsdalen, and Andrew Olson, who settled at Porterfield in 1875. It is probable, however, that Norwegians had already settled in the city of Marinette before that time.

Churches and Congregations

By 1905, Marinette County had eight Norwegian congregations and seven churches. Three congregations belonged to the United Church, three to the Lutheran Free Church, and two to the Methodist Church.

Public Office

Hans B. Pouse was the first Norwegian to hold public office in the county. He was elected County Clerk in 1880.

Norwegian Place Names

The post offices of Konsted and Amberg were, as far as is known, named after Norwegians.
