Marshall County, Iowa

Norwegian Settlement

An early settler in Marshall County recalled that when he arrived in 1864, there were only five Norwegian families in the county: Tord Hagen, Søren Olsen, Andreas Olsen, Christian Gemre, and Petter Siversen, together with their families. All were Quakers and had settled there in 1861. In 1864, they were joined by Ole Bryngelsen and Mikael Bryngelsen from Røldal, as well as H. F. Rinnan from Trondheim.

A large share of the Norwegian Quaker emigrants found permanent homes in Marshall County. In the vicinity of Le Grand, they established their own congregation, church, and school. Most had come from Røldal and the Stavanger area.

Churches and Congregations

By 1905, Marshall County had four Norwegian congregations and two churches. Two congregations belonged to the Quakers and two to the United Lutheran Church.

Education

There was a Quaker school at Le Grand.
