Early Norwegian Settlement
The first Norwegians in the county were A. Rice, E. Rice, and R. Bemnes from Sogn, together with K. K. Bekkedal from Hallingdal. They settled near Frankfort in 1891 at a place later known as Bekke, named after Bekkedal. They were followed by Wm. Adsmon from Telemark, A. S. Nelson from Sogn, and F. Neset, M. Anderson, A. Lee, A. Lund, M. Gaarden, P. Strøm, and the Weideman family. These settlers established themselves in the vicinity of Deer Lodge. Corn, potatoes, and livestock were the principal sources of income.
Churches and Congregations
A Norwegian congregation was established at Frankfort in 1893 by Pastor J. Nummedal of the United Church.
