Norwegian Settlement at Gravenhurst and Jarlsberg

In the early 1870s, a number of Norwegians settled in the area around Gravenhurst and Sequin Falls. The latter place was later renamed Jarlsberg, giving the settlement a distinctly Norwegian place name.

Churches and Congregations

A Norwegian congregation was established at Jarlsberg Post Office in 1876, with Pastor M. P. Ruh of the Norwegian Synod as its first pastor. The congregation’s church was dedicated in 1884. By 1905, there were two Norwegian congregations and two churches in the Gravenhurst-Jarlsberg area, both belonging to the Norwegian Synod. At that time, Pastor Kolbein Hovde, also of the Norwegian Synod, served the congregation at Jarlsberg.
