Ozaukee County, Wisconsin

Norwegian Settlement

Ozaukee County, situated along Lake Michigan between Milwaukee and Sheboygan Counties, was passed through by settlers from Valdres and other parts of Norway as early as 1846, but no substantial Norwegian settlement developed there.

The only place where a noticeable number of Norwegian families could be found was Port Washington. Among the Norwegians who lived there for any length of time were Lars Larsen, Justice of the Peace; Chr. Larson, a fish merchant; E. Andersen; N. Galtland; T. Galtland; Martin Jacobsen; S. Jacobsen; O. Johnson; N. Nilsen; A. Nilsen; and N. Pettersen.

Churches and Congregations

There was one Norwegian congregation in the county, with its own church. The congregation was established by 1848 and, at the time this account was written, belonged to the United Church.
