Early Norwegian Settlement

At Friday Harbor, where a small number of Norwegians settled, Benjamin Jensen from Hemnes in Rana was the first. He settled there in 1884. O. Wold was another early Norwegian settler in the area. Farming and fishing were the principal sources of income for the Norwegian population, with much of the fishing taking place along the Pacific Coast.

Public Office

August Wold was the first Norwegian to hold public office in San Juan County. He was elected County Treasurer in 1896.
