Shelby County, Illinois

Early Norwegian Settlement

A Norwegian from Trøndelag named John Moe settled in Shelby County in 1861. He was followed shortly afterward by Jonas Paulson from Kongsberg and a few other Norwegians. The settlement did not become permanent. Moe and the other Norwegian settlers soon moved away, and no lasting Norwegian community developed in the county.
