Early Settlement
One of the first settlers in the county was Iver Monsen, who settled along the Bad River, not far from Fort Pierre. The year of his arrival is unknown. Monsen later lost everything he owned in a flood. His house was swept down the Bad River and became lodged among some trees, where it remained for two days and one night. Monsen, his wife, and their three children were trapped inside and had to chop a hole through the roof in order to escape. Shortly afterward, the house sank. The entire family survived the ordeal.
