Stanton County, Nebraska

Early Norwegian Settlement

John Johnson from Nord-Aurdal, Valdres, was the first Norwegian settler in Stanton County. He came from Iowa and settled at Stanton in 1867. He was followed by Knut Evensen from Telemark, as well as Svend Johnson and Halvor Johnson, both from Nord-Aurdal, Valdres. Potatoes, corn, and wheat were the principal products of the settlement. When the settlers needed to sell their produce or purchase essential supplies, they had to travel all the way to Omaha, about 107 miles away. These journeys were made by ox team.

Churches and Congregations

Pastor P. T. Hilmen of the Norwegian Synod established a congregation in the settlement in 1876.
