Anyone know any Snippruds?

Hello everyone. I have a relative coming form the Hjardahl area, Sauland to be exact, with the last name Snipprud (that may be a Americanized version of the spelling). This doesn't fall with in the a traditional way of naming. How can that be? And I see the suffix "rud" on many town names. Does "rud" have a meaning?
