Arendal Paulsens

Hi All, My ggrandfather, Christian Paulson, was born in Arendal on 4/1/1834, to Poul Christenson & Tobine Thorsdatter. According to familysearch they had three other children: Peder, 1840; Niels, 1845; and Anne 1848. My problem is that I know he arrived in Melbourne, Australia on 19/Nov/1853 aboard the "Jenny Lind" from Hamburg, but there is no emigration record that I can find. Did emigrants by land need to make a report before leaving, as did those who left by sea? If anyone can help me with this or any info on the Paulsen family, it would be greatly appreciated.
