Army Questions

Can anyone tell me about the Army in Norway? My ggg granfather Andreas Andersen 1810-1855 is listed on his marriage document (1834 to Elen Mari Hansdatter)as being Kommandorsergeant. What does that entail? Was their a war at the time or was he just on standby? Was he paid or would he have had another occupation? This has probably been discussed before, but I have not figured out how to search the forums.
