Bolstad in the USA

Looking for my great-grandfather John Bostad, born about 1887 and died in California about 1935. He was booked to board the Titanic to migrate to the United States though New York but his ship from Norway to Liverpool (assumption) was late, thankfully. I don't know how he made it over to the USA by what port to or from, or even where he was born in Norway nor to what parents. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Michelle
