Charles Thompson

I am looking for information regarding my great grandfather who is believed to have been born in 1854. Legend says that he was a Norwegian sailor who 'jumped ship' in Australia - probably in Melbourne or Portland. It is also thought his father was Thomas Thompson. Any information re a Thompson family in Norway would be appreciated.
