family connection

I hope this question makes sense. How do I know that the people I find in Norway are really my relatives? I ask because a lot of the people had the same name. What method do I use to make sure that is the correct family? Example: my relatives are Knutson and Knudson (2 different lines). There were a lot of Knut Knutson's.
