Help getting started - sailors records

Hi, first time so hoping someone can help. I'm trying to find if I can trace any sailors records. I am looking for Nils Andersson Westergren born 1837 in Norway and a sailor - that's all I know! He married a Liverpool girl and settled there. I don't know if it's possible but was wondering if marine records exist which may help me track down where in Norway he came from
