Iver Gjertin Iverson

Looking for any Norwegian record of my great-uncle, and have found nothing. He entered the United States at Biloxi in May 1900, a crew member on the Norwegian ship Barossa. In various American records he claims to have been born in Bergen 1 August 1879; father Iver Knudsen, mother Gjertrud ___. I find no Norwegian records of any of this. Growing up in Seattle I remember him as a mostly silent old man, married to my grandmother's sister. They married in the USA the day she arrived from Norway…possibly had never met previously. Never any discussion of his family or personal history, except that he had once altered his last name to avoid prosecution for "jumping ship" as a merchant sailor.
