Kristiansund Routes

I have ancestors who lived near Otta. Legend has it that their 1868 departure was from Kristiansund. Given the two locations does that sound logical, or would they more likely have chosen Kristiansand or Christiania. If kristiansund sounds right, would they sail north around the U.K. and to United Sttes direct or would they use a feeder line to Hull and then train and depart from Liverpool.
