Hello!
I've been researching my great grandfather's lineage without much success. All I know is his name was Martin Matson and he was born in Norway in 1869 (familysearch says 1870, but I am going by his grave marker). Both of his parents were born in Norway, but I don't know their names.
I know he had a half brother named John Knudson/Knutson who was born circa 1881 in Norway, so his mother had to have remarried when he was a child.
According to a newspaper article from Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada, he emigrated from Norway to North Dakota in 1892.
He married Minnie Peterson, who was born in the US to parents of Norwegian descent.
He went to Claresholm, Alberta in 1902, but he stayed working in Munich North Dakota for another 8 years and the family emigrated to Claresholm, Alberta, Canada in 1910.
In the 1916 Canadian census they had the following children:
Myrtle Matson age 11- born in United States
Clarence Matson age 9 - born in United States
Emmett Matson age 7 - born in United States
Rudolph Matson age 4 - born in Alberta
Clara Matson age 2 - born in Alberta
Martin is listed as "Employer" and worked on his farm. He also had two labourers on the census Conrad Anderson and Carl Omet, both from Norway.
Minnie and Martin went on to have several more children after that: Orran, Amy, Alvin and Richel (Rachel), who died in infancy.
Martin passed away in 1932 in Claresholm. Anyone else who may have answers to where his family came from and what their names were are no longer living. The news article also says he is survived by a nephew, but the name is illegible (looks like Aspjour Stuelcken).
My grandmother was Clara Olena Matson, and I also recall her mentioning cousins in Norway - one named Thora. Another family member named Severina (sp) left Norway to go to New York to become a hat designer.
Does anyone have any Matson relatives in Norway who may know this family?
Thanks so much!
