maternal grandfather

I was born and still live in Australia. I am trying to find any information on my grandfather..Edward James DeLeiuen. This is the spelling I have grown up with. The story was that he was born in Kristiania, Norway in the late 1880s or thereabouts. He then boarded a ship as a cabin boy and jumped off in Australia. He would have been about 12 years old. Our family have tried unsuccessfully to find a birth certificate or any other family members anywhere in the world except for his Australian descendents. Any help would be appreciated as it's looking like this mystery may never be solved. He reportedly had one sister named Kristina..not sure if it starts with C or K...she stayed in Norway.
