merchant seaman to Melbourne, Australia

I am trying to find a list of merchant seaman that sailed to Melbourne, Australia in about 1928 - 1929. I am searching for my wife’s great grandfather. We believe that his surname was Peterson. My wife’s grandmother was borne in Melbourne to unmarried parents. Any information will help.
