Othar Hjalmar Bommen

Please,- advice to trace my Great Grandfather - Othar Hjalmar Bommen, born circa 1851 in Norway. My information shows he never appeared on the UK census until 1911, and then as a visitor to an address in Cardiff, as Norway Resident. He is described as Master Mariner. I have an alternative spelling for his second name - "Hgalman". His first appearance in UK records appears to be on the marriage certificate (1897) of his daughter Mabel Bommen to my grandfather Percival Lewer. This is also the first UK record of Mabel bommen. I am fairly new to researching family history and not yet overseas so ALL help will be appreciated.
