Procedure for boarding steamships in Christiania

Does anyone know if steerage passengers had to board a barge or ferry to get to the steamship in the harbor at Christiania or did the steamships dock next to land? Also, were steerage passengers examined by a doctor before boarding their ship at Christiania in the 1880s?
