Spelling of Skutle surname

Hello, I have recently started working on Ancestry.com and this is my first post on Norway-Heritage. My last name is Nelson and I have traced it back to Nels Bryngelson 1820-1898 in Wisconsin? But, our family legend is that my ancestors were originally Skutle. Here in America I have seen other spellings of the name like: Skuttley, Skutley, etc. Would someone be able to shed some light on this?
