Transportation in 1883

From Surnadal there are two different ports my gr grandfather could have sailed from in 1883. From Surnadal to Trondheim it looks like travel would have been mostly over land. From Surnadal to Kristiansund it looks like travel would have been more by boat. Which one would have been the most logical port for him to have traveled to in 1883? Archives in Trondheim show he purchased a contract 23 May 1883 to sail from Surendal to Michigan. But "Emmigrants from Kristiansund (1882-1930)" has his date of departure listed as 23 May 1883.
