trying to find out about my surname??

My last name is Skaalid pronounced "Scully" I dont know much about it except that it wasn't my families real name when they lived in Norway. They had to change it to Skaalid when they moved to Canada. I think it was the name of my greatgrand parents farm in Norway. They came over to Canada in 1924. Thats all i know. Its hard for me to search for my ancestors in Norway if I dont know my families original surname. So if anyone has any information on anything I wrote I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you[:)]
