Tyrifjord

My greatuncle was a seaman registered in Skien 1925. According to their records, he ran away from the Tyrifjord 11/1926 when it was docked in New York. The notation said that he would be punished if he returned to Norway. Does this mean that he could never return home again? He has been missing since about 1935. Would he be able to work on another line - such as the United Fruit line where his brother worked? I guess he could never be legally naturalized? Thanks for your help.
