What happened to Johan Christian Hansen ?

My great grandfather Johan Christian Hansen was born in Aremark Østfold Norway in 1842. He married in Fredrikstad with Torine Sophie Rasmusdatter, and the got a son Hans Robert born in Fredrikstad in 1874. I had information that said they then emigrated to Amerika.. After some work and very much help from friends, I found out that he in 1900 lived in Iron Moutains Michigan. He then used the name John C Hanson, and he was a widower, and he emigrated in 1887. The same year his son Hans Robert marries a swedish girl Ida May Wedlund, also in Iron Moutains. In 1905 they lived in Milwauke Wisconsin. But what happened then? I have tried to find out when and where John C Hanson died, but without success. As I see it, there might be 2 possiblities: 1 .He died in Iron Mountains after 1900 2. He is the John Hanson in the 1910 census: 68 years Estimated birth year: abt 1842 Birthplace: Norway, Muskegon Ward 7, Muskegon, Michigan Marital Status: Widowed, Year of Immigration: 1879 (?). He had a sister in Muskegon, that could be the reason for moving there. My searches have mainly been through the FamilySearch databases, but are there other possibilities to find this information. I know there are pay-sites like ancestry.com, but do they have more to offer. Or could the reason for not finding him be that the records are lost. Hoping for some help.
