What happened to Kittil Herbrandsen?

Hi In december 1889 it was assumed that Kittil Herbrandsen was dead. According to an article in a newspaper he left his wife Live Kirstine and children in 1864 and travelled to America. Since then no-one had heard from him. I have been asked to search for him in US, but have not been able to find him. Nor have I found his emigration. His name might have changed so much that it is impossible to recognize him.
