Which Ship did he sail on?

In his 28-page typed, single-spaced "autobiography," my ggrandfather said he and his family sailed from Stavanger on April 6, 1887. How would I find out: 1. What ship this was 2. Where he docked exactly...did they all come into NYC? He said he and his family were "a thoroughly dejected and half-starved bunch" who didn't "take much interest in life or our surroundings." Thus, I guess, why he left out some important details![:)]
