The Emigrant Ship Database contains information about ships involved in European emigration, with particular emphasis on vessels carrying emigrants across the Atlantic during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although Norwegian emigration forms an important part of the collection, the database is not limited to Norwegian ships or Norwegian routes. Each ship record may include technical and historical information about the vessel, such as its construction, shipyard, dimensions, ownership, operators, name changes, and later history. Where available, the records also document individual voyages, routes, ports of departure and arrival, and the shipping lines or agents connected with the emigrant trade. The database is closely linked to other parts of Norway Heritage. Ships can often be connected with passenger lists, voyage records, historical images, and articles, making it possible to follow both the vessel itself and its role in the wider history of migration between Europe and North America. The amount of information available varies considerably from ship to ship. Some vessels are documented in considerable detail, while others are represented by more limited information gathered from contemporary records and other historical sources. If you have additional information, corrections, or other relevant details to contribute, you are welcome to leave a comment. |
