Hi,
I am looking to confirm what I recently found. I don’t know if possible with what little info I have.

Ole Baker’s wife Julia Canuteson was born here in the USA LaSalle Co.,
I confirmed yesterday that Jens Canuteson was her father born in Norway. He was born abt 1817 In Stavenger Norway.

Jen’s had brother’s

Halvor

Ole -- Tombstone here for Ole says he was born in 1807

Canute

1.)Would like to know who the parents of these boys were.
2.)If the year of exit from Norway could be found.

I found this info on who I believe to be Halvor’s son.

CANUTESON, Ole A.
TX 30th Cav Co C. CSA. Residence: Norse, Texas. Born Born “Ole Andreas Knudsen” on 29 Apr 1834 in Kendall County, Illinois, of parents from Stavanger, Norway. Civil War: Enlisted for three years or the war on 1 Jul 1862 at Waco, Texas. Private. He was sick in hospital at Houston, Texas, from 26 May to 31 May 1863. Post war: Died 15 Jan 1920 in Bosque County, Texas. Sources: ("Norwegian Soldiers in Confederate Forces" by C.A.Clausen & Derwood Johnson, publ. in Norwegian-American Studies, volume 25, Northfield, Minnesota. p114) (Ulvestad p303) (www.borgerkrigen.info) "Ole A. Knudsen".

I believe Kendall Co., IL is wrong. Should be Kendall, NY. The census records I find list NY as place of birth.

Thanks, Jodie

Hi, this is a hard nut to crack Jodie.

More than half way down in this site tells he was a soldier in 30th Texas Cavalry Regiment as Ole Knudsen (Kanuteson) born in Kendall, NY.

Since LaSalle is mentioned, this next can be a namesake and a blind track.
Not all the info correspond, found it in LDS records:

Ole Knudsen born in Miller, La Salle, Illinois, parents; Jens Knudsen and Margrete Johnson.
Ole Knudsen married July 18. 1878 in Rutland, La Salle to Anna G. Irgens b. in Ruthland, La Sall, parents; Henry Bravis and Sonovo Johnson.

One of the difficulties in this instance is the large number of Ole Canuteson (Canutson or Knudson etc.) listed in Lasalle County, Illinois in this time frame. Here is the 1880 US Census for a Ole Canutson married to Anna. However this Ole is listed as having been born in Illinois in abt. 1847, making him neither of the two Ole's found in the 1850 US Census.

Yes you are Right about the Ole Canuteson’s.
I don’t know which Ole belongs to which Brother,

Jen’s/Yans father Had Son’s Halvor, Ole and Canute

Jens/Yans had son’s named: Ole and Knute

Halvor had sons named: Ole and Knute

Ole had 1 son named: Samuel (Ole buried here in LaSalle Co., IL)

Canute had sons named: Ole and Andrew

In Samuel’s (Son of Ole) Probate file.
It states that Ole son of Canute lives in Waco Tx in 1919 (No dates given of his age).

It also states that Ole A. son of Halvor lives in Norse, TX in 1919 (No dates given of his age)

So… The only thing I have to go on is, Probably safe to say that Canute ? is Jens/Yans, Halvor, Ole and Canute’s father, And I am assuming because of the write-up on Ole above they were from Stavenger.

I believe this family is a family of Early Norwegians with Cleng Peerson and One of the Ole’s and Knute were founders of Norse Settlement in Texas

Julia Canuteson daughter of Jens was born here in LaSalle Co., 1844

What I don’t know is did all Brother’s of Jens come together with parents? Or did they come at separate times? And when?

Also find on Net in various places:
Among the pioneers in Norse was Cleng Peerson. The founder of the community of Norse was Ole Canuteson (Ole Knudsen) from the Stavanger region of Norway.

I found this Obit

CANUTESON, OLE A.--Christine NEAL
Mr. Ole A. Canuteson, who first saw light of day on April 29,1834, near Rochester, New York and who had been slowly declining for the last few years, Quietly passed away on January 16,1920, at the ripe old age of 86 years, 8 months and 18 days. On Sunday afternoon his remains were interred in the Norse Lutheran Cemetery, Rev. J.K. Rystad pronouncing the last sad rites in the presence of a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends. Deceased leaves on daughter, four sons, 15 grand children, and four great grand children, besides a host of friends to mourn his loss. Mr. O.A. Canuteson was naturally of a kind hearted, benevolent, modest, and unassuming disposition, an honest, upright and conscientious man; a faithful and devoted husband; a kind father; a fine neighbor and a good man. His parents were among the old pioneers who blazed the way in the wilderness, and came on the sloop, being the first immigrants from Norway who arrived in 1825, settling near Rochester, New York, where the subject was born. His parents and the infant, Ole, soon moved to La Salle County, Illinois, where they helped establish the "Fox River Settlement", the first permanent Norwegian Settlement in America. Mr. O.A. Canuteson and family moved to Bosque County, Texas, in the spring of 1859 and helped establish the Norse Norwegian Settlement. He, thus, endured the drawbacks and hardships of a frontier, pioneer life both in Illinois and Texas. Mr. O.A. Canuteson was a true and conscientious liberal until within two years of his death when he was baptized and, practically, joined the Lutheran Church, evidently for satisfaction and his soul's salvation. Another old pioneer gone to his eternal abode and reward. Peace to his ashes. May his memory ever remain fresh. His surviving children were: Daughter: Cora Olivia Canuteson Aulie; Sons: Halvar, Andrew, Albert L., Alferd Severin; Deceased Children: Daughters: Mary Ann (Anna Marie) Canuteson Christenson, Julie Helen, Elisabeth; Son: Canute; Wives: Ingeborg (1870), Christina (1891), Martha (1919)

Hi.

Found this information about Ole Andreas Canuteson and that his father was Oliver Canuteson (Ole Knudsen), see middle og the page.

Information here tells Oliver Knudsen (Canuteson) came to America and New York 1825.

The Cleng Person party on Sloop Resauration from Stavanger arrived N.Y 1825 with 52 emigrants.
This passenger list from the journey contains only 25 of the names.

Add information about Sloop Restauration.
They arrived N.Y. Oct. 9. with 21 passengers more than the boat was approved for.
The Skipper Peder Eriksen Meland was arrested, the ship seized and they were fined for 3150 Dollar.
By help in USA they send a letter to the authorities with a plea for clemency.
The letter ended up in the US Congress and Nov. 5. they were pardoned by President John Quincy Adams.
See the document almost bottom of the page, including the President´s signature here

Hi

In volume 1 of the Naeseth series Norwegian Immigrants to the United States: A Biographical Directory 1825-1850, the list of Restauration immigrants includes 50 names with added information on page 8 that "All evidence points to the fact that there were three more passengers on board the Restauration. However, Rosdail and others have not determined who they were. Rosdail suggests that two of them may have been a couple, forgotten, who returned to Norway."

The sources for the list of names published in Naeseth are two chiefly:

The Sloopers, Their Ancestry and Posterity by J. Hart Rosdail, published 1961

Utvandrere fra Rogaland published 1942 no author listed

The list of the folks of the Restauration itself has no man of the first name Knut/Knud nor any person whose name is fully identified as Knudson / Knutsen; Knudsdatter etc.

In the book, there is an Andreas Knutson Stangleland (b 1 Sept 1799, Høyland) listed who's arrival year is given as 1824. He did settle first at Kendall NY then moved about 1838-39 to Noble County, Indiana. He married 8 June 1827 to Susan Cary, they had 9 children, no daughter named Julia, and sons named Eleazer, Tollak, Andrew Jackson and Benjamin Franklin.

This volume covers lists dating into 1843. In this volume there are 26 Ole Knudsens, 2 Jens Knudsens, 7 Knud Knudsens, 1 Knut Knutsen, 9 Halvor Knudsen/Knutsen.

Hilsen,
Jackie M

Kåre, Information here tells Oliver Knudsen (Canuteson) came to America and New York 1825.

Oliver CANUTESON, one of the first company from Norway to New York, in 1825. Came to Illinois in 1834 - died in 1850. He left two sons and one daughter. One son died in the army in 1863. (Could be Ole, Knute & Margaret)

If you look at 3 names down there is another Oliver KNUTESON came from Norway to New York in 1825, and to Illinois in 1834; died in 1848, leaving four children (Could be Halvor, Ole, Knute and Jens)

If as lyndal40 suggest that Halvor is probably Oliver. Then perhaps the other Oliver (Halvor) who dies in 1848 is Father to the Oliver (Halvor) who died in 1850.

Maybe all the boys took the father’s surname of Canuteson instead of Halvorson. And the assumed father who died in 1848 father’s name Canute.

I don’t have access to the 1840 census in LaSalle Co., IL I know it only list how many and not names other than head of household. But would there be a Halvor (Oliver) Canuteson in 1840?

Would there be exit papers for Halvor Canuteson in 1825 from Stavenger?

You can search the earlier postings of the Forums on this website by using the link above on the upper right of this page entitled Forum Search. You can search for any word or combination of words.

Jackie is probably referencing the books by Gerhard B. Naeseth, "Norwegian immigrants to the United States : a biographical directory 1825-1850" which has been published in a series of volumes. He wrote other books also, but researchers into early Norwegian emigrants most often refer to the above. There are a number of people who have one or more of the Naeseth volumes and who volunteer to do limited lookups.

My understanding is that Volume I of the series is out of print. You might want to try ILL (interlibraryloan) at your local public library to see if there is a library which could loan the book. Failing that you can also request photocopies of pages in books through ILL.

Good Luck to you...

So if this is one of 2 different Oles of the same family that went to Texas.
Son of Canute born 1832 in Norway
Son of Halvor born 1834 in NY

We know that Canute didn't come to us until after 1832 and would have brought wife and Ole when he was about 30 years old.

Can we find exit papers for them?

I still struggle reading the Norwegian handwriting and can only pick up a word or 2 here and there.

Would there be any clues in the God parents? Do they name siblings as God parents ever?

Another thing I noticed... Why do they wait so long from death to burial in the early records?

Thanks, Jodie

Hi,
Yes I think the 2 Oles’s that are listed as 1st cousins (of Samuel Canuteson, son of Ole, Brother of Jens, Halvor & Canute Canuteson) Probate record are the 2 Ole’s I find in Bosque Co. TX. They would be 1st cousins to Julia Knuteson (Ole C. Kittleson Baker’s wife) Samuel’s Probate record in 1919 states that Ole son of Canute lives in Bosque Co., Waco, TX and that Ole son of Halvor lives in Bosque Co., Norse TX. It also states that Halvor had a son named Knute that had died prior to 1919. I am believing this is the son who died 07 Dec 1862 in the Civil War Prairie Grove, Ark (Civil War Battle).

Son of Canute -- Ole Born 4 Sep 1832 in Nordstokke, Avaldsnes, Norway Died 6 Nov 1920 Texas Burial Oakwood Cemetery, Waco, Texas Spouse: Ellen Malene Endresdatter Sep 1850 LaSalle Co., Illinois. ( I don’t know what happened with marriage records for this family in the 1850’s. I cannot locate any here in LaSalle Co., I cannot find one for Julia Knuteson & Ole Baker in 1866 either)

Son of Halvor -- Ole Andreas Canuteson Ole Andreas Canuteson Born 29 Apr 1834 in NY Died 16 Jan 1920 Norse, TX Burial, Our Savior Lutheran Cemetery. He was married 3 times, Ingeborg, Christina, and Martha.

At this point, Nothing I find on line clearly names the parents of these 2 Ole’s just that they were Norwegians from the Stavenger area. I am in search of: Birth Parish records, Exit Parish records, Marriage Records, Death Records, ect.. that may name parents and when they arrived in the USA.

I think it is very safe to say they were NOT on the restoration ship in 1825. So they were not the original Sloopers. But did come shortly after 1832-1834

I do not have Ancestry. But I have come across where it states Ancestry has the Death record of one of the Oles above. Is it possible for someone to do a look up for me?

Thanks, Jodie

Is this saying that Knuds wife Anne died in route to the USA in 1850?
Does this say Ole was born Sept 4 1832 in America?
the 2 knuts also born in America?
I am confused if they don't come till 1850?

Can you send me the link to these pages?

I think we are on the right track!

So do you think Halvor Knudsen, Nordstokke 32 years old, moving out to "Utlandet" in 1831, see #14. is related Knut Knutson?

Thank-you ALL! for all your help!!!

Yes Ole and Jens both came to America.
It is Ole's son Samuel that had the Probate record where I was able to put the names to the family. I have no idea when he came, There were 2 Sam's one died in infancy and the other was born in 1865. So he was here before then.

Jen's I don't know either. His daughter Julia was born in 1844 here in LaSalle Co., IL so he was here by then. Jen's would have been 11 years old when his Mother died but his Dad lived long.

Knud Halvorsen and Gurine Knudsdatter sold Vestre Espeset 1801 to Ole Gunleiksen due to bad economi.

They settled down on Runningen 1806, a small farm, as leaseholders, the anual rent was 6 RiksDaler.
The contract secured them to stay there as long as they lived.
After they left Ronningen about 1810-11 for Karmøy the farm has not been inhabited.

Strange coincidence;
Knud Halvorsen and Gurine Knudsdatter Espeseth were neighbors in Hovin to Kittel Olsen and Aslaug Nerisdatter Østre Bakka "Toresbakka".
Kittel Olsen Bakka also owned Nordre Espeset which he gave to his son Halvor in 1807, see my posting from July 26.

Did ancestors of these families met in the USA?

The last info I am able to find about the Nordstokke family are as follows:
Nordstokke consited of several farms, some had local names, The name on Knud Halvorsen´s Nordstokke was Rindå.

It was the son Knut Knudsen that takes over Nordstokke after the parents.

Guri Knudsdatter Espeseth died on Nordstokke August 21. 1826, age 57, see #18

Knud Halvorsen Espeseth died on Nordstokke as "Folgemand" July 20. 1845, age 87, see #48

"Folgemand" means the former owner of a farm secured free supplies as long as he lived.

Strange that the emigration records has not been found.

Yes it is strange,
I went to our County research center today. I need to read some papers. Maybe I will find a clue. It appears that all of them came at different times. I saw that in The Slooper book. That a Canute Canuteson also came at the time of Halvor in 1831. They felt that he may be related to Halvor but not Halvors brother.

It's a mystery

This was taken out of a Notebook Binder. Titled Norwegian Immigrants. ( I need to write down the author of the pages next time I am there. I found this at the end of my visit) It’s about her Uncle Rasmus
(Now we meet Ole Canuteson)
Ole Canuteson
In 1850 Ole Canuteson and his father Knud Knudson came to his Uncle, Halvor Knudson, in the Fox River Settlement. His Mother died from Cholera on the way from Chicago to Ottawa. In the Fox River settlementthey found Kleng Peerson, just back from a trip to Texas, and on his advice and promise to accompany them, they concluded to go to Texas. They went to Dallas County and stayed there 3 years, near whereJohanNordboe was then living. No Norwegian settlement was found there. In 1853 they went to Bosque county, and Kleng Peerson went with themnot as a leader but as a follower, as he was now to old to lead in settlement enterprises.
A few paragraphs later it states that, Ole Canuteson was born Sept 4 1832 on the island of Karm (Karmt) an island which abounds in monuments of antiguity, on the farm Nordstokke, near Kobbervig, in the Parish of the famous Augsvaldsn’sin Stavenger Amt. One of his Uncles Halvor Knudson, emigrated to America so early that he settled in the Fox River settlement about the same time as Gjert Gregoriuson Hovland, and became his neighbor. A younger Uncle Jens, emigrated somewhat later in company with a fiddler, Sjur Dale, who afterwards became a Mormon.
When Kleng Peerson visited Norway in 1842, he brought with him many letters from America to Ole Canuteson’s father and to others. In 1850 his parents resolved to go to America, and he took passage in the Kohler brig, commanded by Capt. Westergaard. In this same ship came Rev A. C. Preus with his wife, whose maiden name was Engel Bruun. Captain Westergaard also had his wife with him on board. (It goes on to mention a few others)
When the rest of the immigrants landed in Chicago all were apparently well, but on board the canal boat which carried them to Ottawa, the dreadful disease cholera made it’s appearance, among those who died was Ole Canuteson’s mother. When the people in the Fox River settlement heard of the cholera they were panic stricken and did not dare to receive the new-comers. Finally the Canuteson’s received shelter in the school-house, and fortunately cholera did not make it’s appearance again. (A summery on rest of paragraph – Knud Knutson only brought 500.00 with him and land was 10.00 an acre in LaSalle Co., they thought of going to Iowa, but Kleng Peerson said land was 50 cents an acre in Texas. So they went on to Texas.)
It goes on to state: In the midst if discussions as to where to settle. Ole Canuteson, young as he was, married a young lady of his own age, Miss Ellen Maline Gunderson, a girl who also had come from the famous Karm. Ole and Ellen were about 18 years old.
So, it appears things are much of what you all have found so far. (Wonder why exit papers are not able to be found?) Halvor came 1st in 1831, Then Jens comes before birth of daughter Julia in 1844, Then Knud, Anna and Ole came in 1850 (Separate from Ole’s new wife Ellen’s exit papers in 1850) No mention of Ole and wife Sarah. We know they came because they are buried here and Ole and Sarah’s son’s Samuel’s probate Proof of Heirship papers confirm that the 4 Canuteson’s are brothers.

Interesting story Jodie.

Captain Westergaard 1850.
They left Stavanger on Brig Favoritten Mai 16. and arrived N.Y. June 26.
No passenger list available.

Picture of Favoritten

Brig Kohler, could it be the ship that took them from N.Y to Chicago or was it the name of the shipowner or operater of Brig Favoritten build 1848 at Kjerringholmen, Stavanger?
J.A.Køhler & Co, Stavanger

I still have some info for you on your other topic, it´s from from Hjartdal, Aagot Halvorsdatters grandfather Torkild Halvorsen Haave.

Hi,

Volume V of Naeseth's Norwegian Immigrants to America has a listing from Favoriten (a brig sailing from Stavanger 16 May 1850 to New York on 26 June 1850, Captain Westergaard) but there is no one of the name Knud Knudson on the list. There are two Knudsdatters Bertha Maria b. 1841 and Berta Karina b. 1849. The oldest folks on the list are J. Bringeland age 51, Christian Ollson age 46, & Ingeborg Bringeland age 47.

The bio on Berthe Torgersdatter Vold who is on the list mentions that her first husband was Knud Knudson Reishus, who was a sailor and was gone many years and Berthe married a second husband in America even though apparently later Knud was not found to be dead but he had settled in America...

There are several Knud Knudsons in the name index in this book, including these listed in a later section saying these are mentioned being developed from secondary sources which include Norge i Texas page 252-254 and a researcher named Derwood Johnson.

Knud Knudsen b.1802 d ____ m 1 Anna Karina Olsdatter Sorstokke bap 2 Oct 1810 d. Illinois in 1850 Knud married second Bertha Betsy Olsson b 1813 d. 1909

Son Ole Knudson b. 4 Sept 1832 d. 6 Nov 1920 m Sept 1850 Ellen Malene Endresdatter (Gunderson) daughter of Endre Gunderson Nordstokke and Malene Aslaksdatter b 1832 d.1908 children 5 are mentioned.

Son Knud Andreas Knudsen b. 1847 used the name Andrew C. Canuteson in US m. Jan 1869 to Andrea Peierson b 1848 d. 1886 6 children, Andrew married 2nd to Martha Johansdatter 1 child noted.

Not all the info correspond, found it in LDS records:

Ole Knudsen born in Miller, La Salle, Illinois, parents; Jens Knudsen and Margrete Johnson.
Ole Knudsen married July 18. 1878 in Rutland, La Salle to Anna G. Irgens b. in Ruthland, La Sall, parents; Henry Bravis and Sonovo Johnson
Where did you find this information on the site? I have been looking and cannot seem to locate it. I have the marriage License for Ole and Anna. Trying to read the writing is difficult. I would like to learn more about Margaret Johnson & Jens

I am trying to sort out page 5 of this Topic, I at 1st thought the wives were mixed up. But looking again thinking there were multiple marriages. Can you help me sort this out?
Page 5 gives wives
Ole Knudsen
Would it be?
1st wife:
Magdele (Magla-Maggela) Olsdatter Stangeland April 9. 1839
Maglas sister Anne Karine married Oles brother Knud Knudsen Nordstokke 1831,

Ole Knudsen first wife, Magdele Olsdatter, died Nov 27 1846, see #98 (Magel Olsdatter).

2nd wife:
Ole Knudsen Nordstokke married Stangeland, Called Stangeland born Tind
married again 10-04-1849 401 (Bad Link I cannot look at record) Serina Sørensdatter ?? Jens ? (Could this be Sarah?)

Here in USA
his wife is Sarah Unk maiden name b: June 1824 (1900 Census record here gives month b: as June and year as 1823) (Tombstone reads year born as 1824) d: 1914 Rutland Township, LaSalle Co., USA (Tombstone reads year 1914) (Gone from Census after 1910)

Jens Knudson
Here in USA his wife is Margaret (Maybe Maiden name Johnson) D: April 5 1869 47 yrs, 1 mo, 24 da (Making birth abt Feb 1822)

I think perhaps Jens married Eli Sirene Sørensdatter Koppervik, Karmøy, parents Søren Rasmussen Kolletre 1781-1835 and Eli Malene Olsdatter 1788-1859, born Jan. 23. bap. June 25. 1820, see right page #23.

Nordstokke and Rindå is ab. one inch from the bottom, farm nr 056-057 and 069 and Stangeland nr 11.

Changing a name;
Often the initials were kept in the US.

With so many names you will probably need some time to sort out a family tree.
The Norwegian part seems correct, could be some married a 2. time in the US, a wrongspelling, this is more than 150 years ago?

In your posting from Aug. 12 you write ---famous Avaldsnes....

Avaldsnes is where king Harald Hårfagre had his recidence.

The royal recidence, name was Gard, is located next to Olavskirken, English summary to the left.
Also the Nordstokke family used Avaldsnes church.

The parish records for Tinn in Telemark are available for years as early as circa 1717 so you probably could find information in those books about the parents births.

Also don't forget to check the LDS RecordSearch (pilot/prototype) website.

Hopkins,
Can you tell me how to search the sites for the name Knut Halvorsen Nordstokke b: abt 1758? I have DIS-Norge for Tinn in my favorites so I can find that. Can I search this for him? How? I have a big language barrier here
I can go to Tinn, 1757-1810, skannet ministerialbok and look under fodt for births. Must I go through the year 1758 page by page for him? How do I know when I have the right person? I know his father would be Halvor but what would Halvor's surname be being I don't know his father's name? And then you add Farm names?
Well, I looked at the LDS site, and again how do I know which one might be him?
I am sure it is simple for you, and I feel at a loss with not being able to read the Norwegian language but a word or two here and there. I do have a dictionary I can look words up on. (That's if it is not hand written and I can't make out the letters)
If you could Explain on how to do this it would help a great deal.

Thank-you, Jodie

Can´t remember if they came from Espeseth.

Next time I will visit Statsarkivet I will let you know.

Some more Karmøy info.
Norway is named after the fjord/fairway between Karmøy and the mainland.
The first written document mention a viking, Ottar from Hålogand´s travel ab. 890 AD to Russia, and this fairway as Nordweg , later Norvegia, Northwegia, Noregr, the Northern route (the way northwards), todays Norge /Noreg - Norway.

Yes, anyone would have to go through the parish records page by page. You the person actually related to those being sought or complete strangers who have no relationship.

I was under the impression that Nordstokke was the name of the farm in Rogaland where they lived much later in their lives. Tinn also??? That seems highly doubtful.

I don't read the Norwegian language either - so no it is not simple for me. But I do make all efforts to do it myself.

The parish records have to be dealt with one by one -- no parish is identical to any other.

The Digitalarkivet web site has been adding scanned images of the original Norwegian parish church records for anyone with Internet access since November 2005.

The Digitalarkivet web site - http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/WebFront.exe?slag=vis&tekst=meldingar
An English option is available by clicking on that word from either the left hand column or the blue link bar along the bottom of the homepage.
The scanned images are available from the homepage link "Skanna kyrkjebøker" [Norwegian version]/"Digitised parish records" [English version] which is listed along the left hand column and from the blue banner of links along the top section of the homepage.
After you've clicked on that link and a new main page has presented on the screen be sure and read the instructions that are available from the Digitalarkivet for navigating the scanned records. The instructions are available in Bokmål (official Norwegian), Nyorsk (Norwegian), Davvisámegiella (Saami), and English.
Recommended basic reading are the "Startsiden" [Norwegian version]/"Main page" [English version], "Brukerveiledning" [Norwegian version]/"User's guide" [English version] and "Om tjenesten" [Norwegian version]/"About this service" [English version].

Good information about translating the formats of Norwegian parish church records during various time periods, many of the basic terms used and understanding how to use the information should be studied at this web site -

No indication of Knuts age when they married July 4 1791, see #7.
No indication when their first child Anne was baptized 3rd sunday in Lent 1792 either, see #10.
One would think that they both came from Tinn, Hovind subparish.
One Knud Halvorsen, Sanden 17 years old was confirmated 1772 in Hoven, indicate birth in 1755? - no parish records available for Tinn 1755 and no info given for the missing books. see #1 1772.

Halvor Knudsen, Sand baptized his son Knud June 1 1755 in Hjartdal, see 12th record on left page. Since no Sand or Sanden farm can be found in Hjartdal it is reasonable to think this one is your Knut Halvorsen (1755).

Knud is mentioed born 1754 and 1759, Gurine 1768, they bought Espeset 1791, the same year they married.

Found some interesting info on Kitil Olsen bakka b. 1810 (page 4 in the other Topic), see here he married Gunnild Thoresdatter Sauro in 1838 (coming later)

To make a living on Espseth was difficult so Kittil and Gunnilld moved to Sauro where Gunnild was born (Northern Sauro)
They got 10 children:

- Ole 1843
- Gunleik 1845
- Nils 1847
- Anne 1850
- Aslaug 1855 died young
- Kittil 1855
- Gunild 1855
- Øystein 1857

With so many children to feed Kittil was forced to borrow money, about 1861 his debt was more than 800 Daler, he was forced to sell Sauro on auction 1862, all that was left was less than 50 Daler.

The whole family emigrated to USA.
The emigration records for Hovind/Gransherad has only the 1861 emigrants recorded, so what year they left we do not know.

It must be a hugh number of people from the Bakka/Espeset/Nordstokke families living in the US today.

I have studied this topic today, since I am searching the same family!

If I understand correctly, Jens Canuteson aka Jens Knutson, born Dec. 28, 1815 in Avaldsnes Co., Norway, emigrated in 1840 and was married about 1843 to one Margretha Johnson, who, according to her tombstone in the Norway cemetery in LaSalle Co., IL, was born in Norway Feb.11, 1822 and whom I suspect be identical to Margretha Jonasdotter, born in Fister, Hjelmeland Co., Norway Jan. 30, 1821 and christened Feb. 11, 1821. Her parents were Jonas Erikson Halsnoy and Martha Bjornsdotter, but this has to be verified! I can find no emigration record for her!

I notice that Jens and Margretha's two oldest children were:

* Guro "Julia" Canuteson, born in LaSalle Co., IL Apr. 9, 1844

* Ole Canuteson, born in La Salle Co., IL Jan. 4, 1847

While you apparently follow Julia, Mrs. Ole Baker, I am interested in Ole. He was married in LaSalle Co., IL July 18, 1878 to the widow Anna Brewick Irgens, born in LaSalle Co., IL 1851 or 1852. They farmed in Rutland township, LaSalle Co., IL where Anna died Dec. 28, 1883. Then my problem is:

* What happened to Ole Canuteson (or Knutson?) AFTER 1883?

Anyone knows?

Thanks a million in advance!

Very sincerely yours,

Lars E. Oyane

It was a pure coincidence that I came into the forum today since I am working on this particular family.

As you know, there are so many forums out there to discuss genealogical matters. I call it a "jungle". I am quite active on the Norwegian digital archives as well as on the NORWAY Rootsweb list, but maybe NORWAY-HERITAGE can offer more possibilities? Maybe I should try a couple of real "brick-walls"?

I have tried searching the Norway cemetery on find-a-grave, but, provided the cemetery record is complete, Ole is not buried there.

It was my hope since this family has been discussed for so many years on NORWAY-HERITAGE, that someone had found some of this information? I notice on ancestry.com there are numerous family trees including Ole and Julia Baker, and I would be surprised if noone living in the neighborhood hadn't already thoroughly researched the local records?
