My great grandfather Christian Borhaven worked as a captain in the Norwegian navy and lived in Grimstad in a house called Brevik House. I am returning to Grimstad and was wondering if anyone knows of it? It is north of Grimstad around the headland, it is a two storey house on the water front. I have old photos I can send.

Alsand house is another family home that was located in Grimstad it is now rumoured to be a museum?

My family left Norway around 1925 for Australia and I am now trying to put the pieces back together.

Many Thanks
Peta

Alsand was a shipyard in the Strandfjorden area, west of Grimstad by Reddalskanalen.

In 1900 there is only one family using the surname Borhaven in Norway, address: Camilla Collets Vei 1, Kristiania (Oslo):
H. C. Borhaven m b hf g Kontorchef i Farveforretning 1854 Grimstad n s
Johanne Borhaven k b hm g Hustru 1860 t n s
Jacob Borhaven m b s Skolebørn 1885 t n s
Elisabeth Borhaven k b d Skolebørn 1887 t n s
Fredrik Borhaven m b s Skolebørn 1889 t n s
Charles Borhaven m f Rønnæs pr Grimstad s Skolebørn 1892

The father was born in Grimstad and the youngest son was living temporarily in Grimstad at the time of the census.

Emigrant from Oslo 18.08.1911 Jakob Borhanen <sic> m g ingeniør born 28.11.85 could be the oldest brother. In Ellis Island records his name wass transcribed as "Iacale Barhaven" !

There is a person living in Oslo with the same name as your grandfather, a relative, perhaps? Look him up in the telephone directory:

Hello My name is Leya Borhaven. I'm not sure if we are of any relation but here in Canada there is a large Borhaven family with roots in Norway. Fredrik Borhaven (b.1889) was my great-grandfather. I will have to ask my grandfather what year Fredrik (his father) came to Canada but I know that all the children (my grandfather and his siblings) were born in Canada. Perhaps your grandfather or great-grandfather was one of the siblings of Fredrik? I'll try to find out more specific names.
