My gggfather Ole Andersen, born Febr. 12 1820, travelled to "America" with the bark Askur which left Drammen mai 5 and arrived Quebec june 22 in 1870. Unfortunately I have not been able to find where he and his family settled - in the US or Canada.
He travelled with his wife Else Christophersdatter, born march 14 1819, and their children Johannes, born 1850, Lauritz Olaves, born 1853, Otto, born 1859, Maren Christine, born 1862, and Carl Bernhard, born 1865.
If anyone can help I will be very happy!

Einar

Hi Canada has the passenger list for the Askur on line Click Here and Ole is listed as Ole Anderson Krogstad. The 1880 census for Eau Claire, Wisconsin has Otto O. (Olson?) Krogstad close to the correct age.

There is also a Ole Krogstad age 62 living with Ole Hanson and is listed as his father in law and a widower. Click Here. Ole Hanson's wife is 26 yr old Mathia so she doesn't really fit in as a daughter of Ole but thought it worth mentioning

Thank you for a quick response, Carla!

The passenger list shows Ole, his wife Else and the five children. Ole and his family came originally from a farm called Krogstad, but moved to a farm in Lier before they left Drammen with the bark Askur.

I would have been nice if Ole Krogstad registered in the 1880 census for Eau Claire Wisconsin is the same man (even though he is said to be 2 years older than when registered onboard Askur ) but if he really is the father-in-law of Ole or Mathia this indicates that the two "Ole Krogstad" cannot be the same person.

With regard to Otto O. Krogstad it would also be nice if he was the son of Ole - they both work in lumber mill, he is about the right age (three years too old), but I have a problem with Otto and Tinas children - Carl O. - 2 years - is said to be born in Norway - this means that Otto must have returned back to Norway, got married, got a child and returned to Eau Claire and got the second child Martin J. - but he is said to have a mother born in Norway while Tina - his mother? - is born in Sweden.

I do not know how reliable the information in US censuses are but here some of the information does not match up.

But again, thank you very much for a quick answer!

Hi In the 1900 census
Surname GivenName Age Sex Race Birthplace State County Location Year

KROGSTAD OTTO O 41 M W NORW OR LINCOLN TOLEDO 1900
He lists his birthdate as Oct 1859 and immigrated in 1870.
He is now married to an Annette who was born in Wisconsin June of 1875 daughters Charlotte, Nora, Agnes and Yugina born in North Dakota and Juanita born in Oregon.

I looked at the orginal 1880 census image and the information appears to be the same as the transcribed information. It could be that Carl was Tina's son from a previous marriage or the wrong information was given.
Interestingly there is a John O Krogstad on the lines above Otto He is a widower but he is 38.

Carla

I am overwhelmed, the Otto Carla has found in Lincoln county is the right one - birthday October 17 in 1859. Also the "John" found by Hopkins is his oldest brother Johannes - birthday June 13 in 1850! From the "Early Norwegian Settlements in Oregon" that Carla refers to another "Krogstad" - Andreas - is mentioned. Otto did have two brothers by that name, but they both died before the family emigrated from Drammen. Maybe that Ole and Else got a child in the US and named him Andreas.
Since I cannot get data from the censuses in the US I wonder if John had a family - some of his possible grandchildren could possibly be contacted. How can Ottos children be traced to find possible grandchildren?

Einar
Thank you so much for your valuable assistance!

Big thanks to all of you.
I now have a lot of information about what happened to my g-g-grandparents and their children.
I think I will try to ask on the internet if anyone in their latest locations know anything about living descendants.
All I can hope for then is that even younger persons happen to have knowledge about people some 60-70 years back.
Again, THANK YOU!

I am again asking for help - and have chosen to continue this topic.

Ole Andersen Krogstads and Else Christophersdatter Longbroes daughter who stayed behind in Norway when they emigrated in 1870 was as stated earlier married in 1860. As her husband died in 1898 and she sold the farm to her son-in-law in 1906 she decided to visit her siblings in USA.

I have no information about when she left and when she returned, but she did.

I wonder if she might have been registered in censuses in 1910 and/or 1920 - most likely she was in US 1909-1915.

Her name could have been registered as Anne Marie Olsdatter Tormodsrud or Krogstad and in 1910 parents were dead and siblings recided as follows
John O. Krogstad, Pelican Rapids, Otter Tail, Minnesota
Ole O. Krogstad, Rock township, Mitchell County, Iowa
Otto O. Krogstad, Portland, Multnomah, Oregon
Maren Christine Krogstad, Bruce, Brookings, South Dakota
