I am trying to help my grandmother understand exactly when and how her Norwegian grandmother and great-grandfather emigrated from Norway.

The family were Mormon converts. Family lore says two daughters arrived in the Utah territories in 1875 -- Annetta (b. 1859) and Josephine (b. 1862) Olsen (Olsdotter?). The story is they crossed the Atlantic in about 1871. My grandmother insists that the story is that they came alone, although their parents death records show they died in Utah. The parents are Jens Olsen Kjeldsrud (b. 1819) and Eline or Elena or Olena Henrichsen (b. 1825) (Henrichsdotter?) from Syverud.

Another piece to the puzzle is that the girls' older sister Hedevig (b. 1849) came earlier and the girls "traveled through New Jersey not knowing they were so near to seeing her." She married a Charles Brandenburg, although I have no information on him other than a name.

Any thoughts on where to begin looking? I've looked through the ships' records that have been transcribed and come up empty. Many thanks for any suggestions from the experts.

Most likely the Jens Olsen that you seek is from Nes, Hedmark, see #25
His parents were Ole Jĝrgensen, Kielsrud and wife Cathrine Jensdatter.
Jens and Ellene married in 1847, see #14
Ellenes father was Henrik Christophersen. She (Elline) was born in 1827, see
#36 and her mother was Anne Nielsdatter.
Annetta is most likely Agnethe being #27 here
the parents being Jens Olsen Aarvold and Eline Hendriksdatter.
Hedevig was born in 1848, see #21
The parents then lived at Engeland.

Thank you, all! We've never known much about the mother's family, so this information is terrific! There's a daughter there that I haven't had record of before. And it's nice to see the spellings corrected -- I'll study those documents thoroughly.

Any way to figure out when they left Norway?

If you check the 1900, 1910 and 1920 US census enumerations of the daughters 'Annetta', 'Josephine' and 'Hedevig' they should list years of immigration to the US. That would give you some more information than just family lore.

Elline Hendriksdatter had a sister Agnethe, see #34 - in 1853 she was a widow and emigrated to US, see #18

The LDS publish a CD entitled "Mormon Immigration Index". That Family History Resource File indicates that Josephine and Agnette Olsen arrived in New York 14 July 1975 1875 on a ship called the Idaho. The Idaho had departed from Liverpool on or about 30 Jun 1875. No indication was clear to me of any earlier departure port or date.

The birthyears for the two girls seem fairly well matched, except that Josephine lists herself as 18 years old in 1875.

I think you will find additional details about their travel to Utah from New York on that LDS CD rom.

Hopkins -- Thank you for the information about the ship Idaho. I will find a copy of that CD-ROM to look at. I've learned a lot from the help I've received here. I really appreciate your time.

I read this last night. Hadn't noticed it previously. It contains good links to other interesting narratives too.

The few minutes I spent with that CD - all the Scandinavian Mormons I specifically looked at arrived in US on ships owned by Guion Line.
