Looking for John Olson Torsaeter ( father Even) on passenger list and birth in Christiana Norway May 4th 1858. traveling on Nordlyset May 14th 1858 out of Christiana Norway. I Got stuck in search when it shows no trips for Nordlyset in 1858 but have evidence on a later passport that says the above dates. I'd really appreciate any help as I would love to see the birth record in Norway too, thanks ..

John Olson Torsæter born in Oslo was only 10 days when he. em.on Nordlyset (Nortern light) Mai 14. 1858.

As his father was Even John was bap. John Evensen, we can therefore assume that his father was then Even Olsen (Norwegian naming practices)

Hi,

The Digitalarkiverket 1865 census farm search finds only 2 farms spelled Torsæter and they are in Ringsaker, Hedmark.
Shorter versions Torset / Torsæt in 4 other parishes and longer Torsæteren in only one parish. None of these are particularly close to Oslo.

Hi,

According to the info on this site, there were 3 ships with the name Nordlyset. The one built in 1853 with transatlatic voyages in 1853, 1856, 1857, 1859 were from Christiania and to Quebec and captained by Capt. Hansen. So it seems possible that potential voyages in the years 1854, 1855, 1858 were also going to Quebec.

A search for Nordlyset in 1858 in the shipping news at www.genealogybank.com and at the Library of Congress Chronicling America newspaper database failed to find mentions of the ship in that year.

A short summary:
John´s parents Even Olsen from farm Skarløkeneie (a subfarm under Skarløken where he lived when he married Else H. 1856) born 1826 on Thorsætereie (a subfarm under Thorsæter) and wife Else Haagensdatter age 29 em. from Ringsaker via dep. port Oslo for America April 19. 1858, right page #26-27
John was born in Oslo Mai 4. and Nordlyset left Oslo Mai 14. 1858?

Can´t find John after a quick search in the Oslo records, perhaps he was christened on Nordlyset?

I may have found Else's father, Haagen Olsen in the 1801 census. He is number 190 at the bottom of the page. Note his mother's name is Else, and he has an older brother Ole Olsen.
http://www.digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=4&filnamn=f18010412&gardpostnr=5&personpostnr=188&merk=188#ovre

Next, is a marriage record Number 375 for Haaken Olsen and Johanna Fredriksdtr, dated 10 Dec. 1822. One of the attendants is Ole Olsen.
http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=6009&idx_id=6009&uid=ny&idx_side=-176

Some additional research needs to be done to verify you are related.

The marriage record for Haagen Olsen and Johanne Fredriksdatter on Dec 10 1821 is #375 - Haagen was a widower and blacksmith, 34 years old, Johanne was a maiden 30 years old.

Haagen would have been aprox 13 years in 1801 and Johanne 9 years.

Johanne in 1801.

More info that's awesome. Can I add that I was inquiring about my great, great, great uncle John Olsen as we are quite proud of him. He started the first hospital in Grand Forks North Dakota and was a famous doctor and surgeon. To think he embarked on the ship to America at 10 days old!!!

Hi,

Just curious, did he go by some other name than John Olson, John Evenson or John Torsæter when he was in Dakota?

There were two Thorsæter mainfarms in 1865, Thorsæter Store (Big Thorsæter) and Thorsæter Lille (Little) and a subfarm "Thorsætereie" where your ancetsors came from.
Name of the subfarm was probaly Thorsæterstykket which was a subfarm under Thorsæter Store.
A photo from 1925 shows Thorsæter Store

Thorsæter is located to Veldre, a subparish in Ringsaker and is an area of hills climbing from Brumunddal

Yes, he went by the name of Dr.John Engstad. Actually I read an article today that said he started the first hospital in North Dakota, as opposed to just the first one in Grand Forks. It was known as the first Norse-American hospital in America. The name of the hospital was St. Lukes founded in1891.
