Hi I am looking for information about my pop who apparently was a cabin boy on the SS Geiser and jumped ship in Fremantle western Australia in around 1912. On all the records we have of him eg my dads birth certificate, applications for volunteering in WW2 state he has stated was born Joseph Albert KOLIN, born in Flekkefjord, Norway on 24 0ctober 1898 however I can find t no record of him. My DNA show 19 per cent Jewish genetics on my paternal side so I am presuming pop had Jewish ancestors. Any ideas of how we can find more information about him would be greatly appreciated as I have no idea where to search next.

In all of the Digitalarkivet records there are only 30 people with last name Kolin.

Records

None of them from Vest-Agder.

In 1900 Census there is only one an Ole Kolin born in Sweden and living in Oslo.

None with a last name of Kolin in the 1910 Census.

Searching without a name but born on 24 Oct and year 1895- 1905 in Flekkefjord finds 4 listings only one in 1898 a girl named Tony Margit Iverda Gabrielson and 3 for a girl named Hedvig Kvale born on that date but in 1901.

Familysearch finds a sprinkling of Kolin in Denmark but none named Joseph.

A bit of a mystery, this. I have often seen that emigrants enter the closest city as their place of origin, so I believe one should leave open the possibility that your "pop" (=grandfather??) was born not literally in Flekkefjord but in the surrounding area. Still, no Kolin in all of Agder, and no Josephs born at the right time. Anything else you have, would be useful.

As for the ship, I see there was indeed a Norwegian ship Geysir sailing to Australia at the time.

That's the one I found. Home harbor in Kristiania/Lysaker, so not clear that it would hire sailors in Flekkefjord.

I did try to find him in the Flekkefjord sailors' rolls, without success. Should perhaps try Kristiania as well.

Also,Oslo's monsterings are individually indexed, so less of a long slog than you might think.

The few people who turn up in searches at Digitalarkivet with last name Kolin, do not have first names that suggest Jewish heritage. I think you should leave open the possibility that your grandfather took a simplified version of his last name with him to Australia.
