Special signs:

When searching the passenger lists, you may come across special signs. Their meanings are explained below:

  • ?? indicates that the handwriting in the original source is unclear or illegible. Part of a name, or sometimes the entire name, may be impossible to decipher.

  • !! indicates that the information given in the original source is obviously incorrect. !! appearing alone in a field indicates that the information is missing from the source.

  • @ separates two alternative readings of the original when it is impossible to determine which reading is correct.

  • % indicates text that was struck out in the original source. A word or passage that was struck out is enclosed by % signs.

  • * following a piece of information, such as a patronymic, surname, or farm name, indicates that the information does not appear in the original source but was added by the transcriber based on information about other persons appearing nearby in the source.

The database primarily covers the New York passenger lists from 1828 to 1850 and Canadian lists from 1865 to 1875. In some cases, information about Norwegian emigrants has been supplemented with data from other sources, such as newspaper announcements, voyage accounts, or various records. Additionally, some entries from the Norwegian Police Emigration Records are included.

Note: This database is not complete. There are many years for which no lists exist (read more about this in the article "Hunting Passenger Lists"). There are also many lists that have not yet been transcribed.
