About this search:

This search covers biographical information about Norwegian emigrants from the Ulvestad Register, a historical record of Norwegian emigrants compiled by Martin Ulvestad. It is separate from the main Passenger List search. The information currently included in the register has been transcribed from volume 2 of Martin Ulvestad’s Nordmændene i Amerika, published in 1913. Volume 1, published in 1907, appeared in two different editions. One of these was more extensive and included a substantial chapter entitled “Sammenstilling av norske Sambygdinger i Amerika.” Many of the individuals listed in that chapter were not included in the 1913 volume. These entries will be added to the Ulvestad Register at a later stage.

  • Name matching: Choose whether names should start with, contain, or sound like (Soundex) your search terms. Soundex is useful if you're unsure of the exact spelling, but may return broader, less precise results.

  • Year: Enter a range to narrow the results to a specific emigration period, or leave the fields blank to search all years. For many individuals, the year of emigration is unknown.

  • Origin: The place in Norway the person emigrated from. Place names may appear in either modern or historical spellings.

  • Residence / State: Where the person settled in the United States. Selecting a state will help narrow the results by region. Some individuals may have lived in several places, but only one place of residence is recorded in the database.

  • Keyword: Searches the full text of each entry's additional information — useful for finding mentions of ships, occupations, or other details not covered by the fields above.

  • Include comments: When enabled, results also include people found through visitor-submitted corrections and notes attached to an entry, not just the original record itself.
