The Swedish American Line was founded in November 1914 by the Swedish ship owner Dan Brostrøm. In the early years of the company's history they were mainly earning their income from conveying Scandinavian emigrants to America, and by taking Norwegian-Americans back to Europe for vacations. As the number of emigrants declined the Swedish America Line, like most of the other great transatlantic companies turned to the cruise market. After 60 successful years, the company's passenger ship operations were dissolved in 1975, suffering severely from a weakened cruise market.
There were not many of the Norwegian emigrants who traveled by this line. The main reason for that is probably that it was a direct competitor to the Norwegian America Line, which could offer a better deal for Norwegians by having direct connections from Norwegian ports to New York. Norwegians traveling by the Swedish America Line had to go via Sweden.
